Season plans

OK, we have some snow to work with.  Assuming the snow sticks around and keeps building up (not always a good assumption even for Winnipeg), our plan is ...

This week, we start training every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 at Windsor Park Nordic Centre.  Note that the Nordic Centre is not yet open to the public.  We have received special dispensation from the ski association to train there (involved lots of begging).  Once the Nordic Centre is open to the public, you will need to buy a trail pass.

For training, we'll start off doing lots of work on technique -- generally alternating sessions between skate and classic.  By mid-December, the Tuesday workouts will become interval-training sessions.  And in January, the Thursday sessions will become distance-training.

Now is the time to develop good habits for your technique!

Registration closing ...

A reminder that club registration closes this Sunday (Dec. 1) at midnight.  (Although we will continue to take registration from potential members in the Boissevain / Turtle Mountain region ... seriously!)

Any problems -- blame Jacek.

Upcoming Season

OK folks, here's the plan:

We start dryland training on Thursday, October 10th at 6:30PM at Westview Park (the big hill north of the Polo Park area).  These sessions will focus on classic technique with ski-striding and some balance drills.  Bring running shoes and, if you have some, short(ish) ski poles.  We'll do this every Thursday until the snow comes.

Once the snow comes, we'll start skiing somewhere every Thursday.

And once the Windsor Park Nordic Centre opens, we'll be training every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 at Windsor.

We'll start off doing lots of work on technique -- generally alternating sessions between skate and classic.  In December, the Tuesday workouts will become interval-training sessions.  And in January, the Thursday sessions will become distance-training.

This year, we're trying to get everyone signed up by early December so as many people as possible can get the benefits of all the early-season work we do on technique.

For those thinking about joining the club for the first time, this is a training/fitness club.  We have a very wide range of ages and abilities.  About half the club does not ski race -- they just like being good on their skis.  The common thread is that everyone loves cross-country skiing and gets out skiing on a regular basis.

Also ... we are looking at setting up an informal group of families that want to go on occasional ski excursions with their children as part of a larger group.  We're calling it the DN Explorers.  Let me (Steve) know if you are interested in this.

Nationals

Levi placed in the top sixteen today at Nationals in the sprint competition.  It continues to be very warm in Whistler.  Levi has already requested team muscle shirts for next year.

Here's a link to the blog the Manitoba provincial team is updating over the course of the event:

Downtown Nordic Manifesto

Here is the plan for Downtown Nordic for the upcoming season:

Tuesday night - Intensity training ("fun" interval training) - led by drill sargeant Steve
     start at 7PM
technique: whatever you prefer (no one is left behind!)

Thursday night - Technique training - led by coach Tim
     start at 7:30 PM
technique: Tim sends an e-mail on the week's technique

All training takes place at the Windsor Park Nordic Centre.

For the first few weeks, until early/mid December, both Tuesday and Thursday training will be on technique and getting the body ready for skiing.

There is no commitment required for the club.  You can come to any practices you want.  However, the Tuesday intensity sessions will get progressively more ... intense ... as the season progresses.  So it doesn't "hurt" to be a regular!

Club Fees: $40 (includes an award-winning toque!)

If you want, you can come try out our practices to see if it's for you.  No obligation.  No salesman will call.

We are a fitness-oriented ski club.
